Malaysia mulls power tariff rebates

By Jason Gerald John

THE Government is considering in giving electricity tariff rebates to industries, especially manufacturers, which are among the largest power consumers in the country.

International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin indicated this at a dialogue with industry players who attended the ministry's luncheon talk in Malacca yesterday.

"The Cabinet would be meeting on Wednesday to discuss the new electricity tariff rates for industrial use in the country.

"We might come up with a mechanism in which industries, especially the manufacturing sector, who are major power consumers, are given a rebate. Small- and medium-sized industries would also be considered. However, the final decision would only be known after the Cabinet meets," he said.
Muhyiddin also said that the Government would be looking into the possibility of setting up a fund similar to the Human Resource Development Fund, which would help employers to retrain their workers, rather than retrenching them.
